Academic Career

Olds earned his doctoral degree in Health Promotion from Indiana University in 1987. He served on the faculty in health education at Ithaca College in New York for 4 years, and for 25 years at Kent State University’s College of Public Health, where he was a founding faculty member of the Council on Education for Public Health. He joined UNM in 2013 in Family and Community Medicine, and now works in the College of Population Health where he serves as the director of undergraduate programs. 

Teaching/Research Interests

While at UNM, Olds has continued his research in pediatric obesity by partnering with Envision New Mexico and the New Mexico Department of Health. He is also part of a research team conducting longitudinal and spatial analyses of body mass index data of kindergartners and third-graders. Further, he has conducted extensive research on adolescent and college student substance use prevention.
